Hayao Miyazaki’s Princess Mononoke has always been big. When it was first released in Japan in 1997, it became the country’s all-time highest-grossing film. Its legacy — as a Miyazaki masterpiece about what we owe to the environment, as one of the titles that started getting academics and critics to sit up and take anime seriously as an art form, as an influence James Cameron cites for Avatar — is mammoth. And now it’s going to be bigger than ever, via a new IMAX release.
Studio Ghibli films make a sort of yearly pilgrimage to the big screen, returning as part of “Studio Ghibli Fest” a few nights each year. But Princess Mononoke has never been on the big big screen before, with this 4K re-release marking the first time it’s made it to IMAX theaters in any format.
In honor of the occasion, GKIDS has released a new poster which, rightfully, zeroes in on San’s indelible mask.

And then there’s this version, which zooms back for a bigger-picture look at San and her adoptive wolf mother Moro in the deep green woods together.

For traditionalists who hold this Miyazaki flick near to their hearts, don’t fret; there won’t be a corruption of the form. The film will be presented in its proper aspect ratio, sans any 3D technology.
Princess Mononoke will be released in IMAX on March 26. Tickets are available now.
