On Wednesday, Sunrise announced the upcoming premiere of a new Gundam TV anime co-produced with Khara, the studio behind Neon Genesis Evangelion and Shin Godzilla. The series, Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX (pronounced as “g-quax”), will be directed by Kazuya Tsurumaki, the acclaimed director of the 2000 anime FLCL, with scripts co-written by Yoji Enokido (Revolutionary Girl Utena) and Evangelion creator Hideaki Anno.
As revealed in the anime’s first trailer, Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX will center on Amate Yuzuriha, a high-school student living peacefully in a space colony. After crossing paths with Nyaan, a war refugee, Amate finds herself inadvertently drawn into the underground fighting scene of “Clan Battles,” where participants duel against one another in mechanized mobile suits.
The staff behind the anime is a veritable who’s who of Japanese anime production. Aside from Tsurumaki and Anno, Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX will also feature contributions from Ikuto Yamashita (Evangelion, Shin Kamen Rider), who serves as the series’ mechanical designer, Take (Pokémon Sun & Moon), who serves as the lead character designer, and Mahiro Maeda (The Animatrix, Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time), who is credited as a storyboard artist on the series.
This new Gundam anime will arrive just shy of two years following the conclusion of Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury, which ended its 24 episode run in June of 2023. Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX appears to be set in its own continuity, separate from the universe of any previous Gundam series, so you won’t have to worry about being too lost once the series premieres. A feature-length edit of the series’ first episodes, titled Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX -Beginning-, will premiere in Japanese theaters on Jan. 17, 2025 ahead of the series’ formal TV broadcast at some unannounced date later next year.
