The fate of the Edge of Tomorrow sequel might still be in flux, but on Thursday, Studio 4°C (Mind Game, Tekkonkinkreet) announced the next best thing: an animated adaptation of All You Need Is Kill, the 2004 light novel by Hiroshi Sakurazaka and Yoshitoshi Abe that Doug Liman’s film was based on.

Directed by Kenichiro Akimoto, who previously served as the CG director for Ayumu Watanabe’s Children of the Sea and the Berserk: The Golden Age Arc film trilogy, All You Need Is Kill will retell the story of the novel from a different perspective than that of either its source material or 2014’s Edge of Tomorrow.

The novel centers on a newly enlisted soldier in a future where humanity is pitted in an existential war against alien invaders known as Mimics. After dying in their first battle, the soldier awakens in the morning prior to the battle, having inadvertently been caught in a time loop. In order to succeed, they’ll have to find new allies and take what they’ve learned from their repeated battles to defeat the Mimics and save Earth.

No word on when the film will be released, but we can expect to hear and see more details and footage of the film in the coming year.
