It's been years now since Hellboy creator Mike Mignola delivered the finale to that sprawling horror universe, but it seems he still can't quite leave Hellboy and the gang behind. Mignola is returning to the franchise this summer for a new standalone adventure called Hellboy and the B.P.R.D.: Professor Harvey is Gone.
Hellboy and the B.P.R.D.: Professor Harvey is Gone features the stunning, painterly artwork of Giuseppe Manunta (Artemis). Get a closer look at Manunta's work by checking out his cover art below:
Professor Harvey is Gone shouldn't be entirely unfamilair to hardcore Hellboy completists. The comic is actually adapted from a prose story written by Mignola's frequent collaborator Christopher Golden. At this point, even Mignola is struggling to find new layers to add to the Hellboy universe, but he did see a valuable opportunity to give visual life to that story.
“I’m a big fan of Giuseppe’s work so I was thrilled when he told me he wanted to do a Hellboy story—The only problem was that I had sort of (finally) run out of Hellboy stories,” said Mignola in a statement. ”My head is so much in my new Lands Unknown series now that for a while I was really drawing a blank. Then I remembered a plot I had given to Chris Golden a while back. He wrote it up as a Hellboy story for Weird Tales magazine (The City in the Sea—Weird Tales issue 367), but that was an unillustrated prose story and there were (I thought) some terrific visuals in that story so I thought Giuseppe would be a terrific artist to put those on paper. So I reworked that original story and idea and turned it over to Giuseppe to work his magic.”
Hellboy and the B.P.R.D.: Professor Harvey is Gone will be released by Dark Horse on August 27, 2025.
As Mignola alludes above, much of his creative attention these days is focused on building out a new fantasy universe called Lands Unknown. Mignola recently published the graphic novel Bowling with Corpses, the first entry in this universe through Dark Horse and his Curious Objects imprint. It was one of IGN's most anticipated new comic books of 2025.
