Details on Companion, the horror-thriller debut produced by Barbarian director Zach Cregger, have been skimpy since Warner Bros. released the film’s mysterious first teaser back in October. With less than a month until its theatrical premiere on Jan. 31, the studio finally decided to pull back the curtain with the first full trailer. And as far as the premise is concerned, I sure did not see that coming. (Spoilers ahead for plot points revealed in the trailer that are probably meant as surprise twists in the movie itself.)
Sophie Thatcher (Heretic) stars as Iris, a young woman swept off of her feet by Josh (Jack Quaid), a charming young billionaire she meets while shopping for groceries. After being invited to a weekend trip at her new beau’s lakeside estate, Iris uncovers a terrible secret: She is, in fact, a sex robot programmed to obey her master’s whims, and their entire courtship has just been one of his sick fantasies. The solution is simple, of course, and it’s familiar from Alex Garland’s Ex Machina: Iris needs to kill everyone who stands in the way of her escape.
That certainly explains the otherwise inexplicable weirdness of the teaser, where Iris is handcuffed to a chair at a dinner table, and she watches with teary eyes but surprising calm as her arm catches on fire. While this full trailer seems like it’s giving away the film’s big twist, I’m betting that first-time feature writer-director Drew Hancock and Cregger have something else up their sleeves, given the cheeky tone of the footage we’ve seen so far.
