Viktor in League of Legends will look a lot more like Viktor in Arcane soon

Viktor, a magically augmented cyborg man, strides through a scene of destruction in his League of Legends splash art.

League of Legends fans first met Viktor as a cybernetically enhanced robot man who had menacing voice lines about the glorious evolution, and how all of mankind would eventually submit to his designs. It’s a far cry from the Viktor who showed up in Arcane, the Netflix adaptation set in Piltover and Zaun. In order to make things a little less confusing, Riot is giving Viktor an Art and Sustainability Update so that he better fits the Arcane lore.

The new Viktor, announced Tuesday in a trailer from Riot, is much less threatening and menacing. Instead, his champion trailer shows him roaming through a bizarre landscape of shadows and stars and monologuing about the fallibility of human nature. This segues into a look at his new gameplay, which is largely the same as his original iteration. One nice upgrade is that his ultimate ability grows each time he kills an enemy champion, allowing him to cover the battlefield with a massive death storm. We don’t know when the new Viktor will hit the game just yet.

I’ll always miss the original Viktor, with his over-the-top accent and his obsession with robot evolution, but the new Viktor is quite striking. His snatched waist and dignified walk give the character a certain gravitas, and his new voice acting is much more restrained and dignified than the predecessor. His new face doesn’t quite match Viktor’s depiction in Arcane; instead of the two faces laid on top of each other, new Viktor’s in-game model looks more like an ornate metal mask. Viktor is also going to join the roster of Wild Rift, which is the mobile version of League of Legends. The rest of Arcane’s cast is already part of Wild Rift, including the most recent champion release Ambessa.

League of Legends players who have used Viktor as their main characters are less impressed with the remake; the front page of the Viktor mains subreddit is full of negative feedback. Riot has changed champion visuals based on fan feedback before, like making tweaks to Smolder’s face after the baby dragon came out looking a little uncanny. We may see some more tweaks to Viktor before his new look hits the game. As for the lore, it’s nice to see a step towards a consistent story with Arcane, but there are still some discrepancies in the biographies of champions like Caitlyn and Jayce. At least this is one step towards a more unified canon.
