Hori’s Nintendo Switch 2 Piranha Plant camera has a resolution of just 480p — a much poorer resolution than Nintendo’s official Switch 2 camera.
The UK My Nintendo Store confirmed the resolutions for both cameras:
- Nintendo Switch 2 Camera - Video capture quality: 1080p.
- Piranha Plant Camera for Nintendo Switch 2 - Camera resolution: 640 × 480
Hori’s Piranha Plant camera, which is officially licensed by Nintendo, is cheaper than Nintendo’s own $49.99 camera. It’s also worth noting that you can use the Nintendo Switch 2 camera accessory or any compatible USB-C camera you'd like with Switch 2. Both cameras are currently slated for release alongside the Switch 2 itself on June 5.
There is some unique functionality with the Piranha Plant camera. The part of the Piranha that houses the webcam can detach from the pot, letting you put it directly on top of the Switch 2. This gives it a portability Nintendo’s own camera lacks. Meanwhile, you can close the plant’s mouth to obscure the lens.
Nintendo fans reacted in shock to the news that the Piranha Plant is just 480p. "How do you even make a 480p camera in 2025?" wondered redditor Ramen536Pie. "That must be harder to do than a 1080p camera."
"That’s actually hilarious," joked LizardsoftheGhost. "Maybe they meant to release this back when the Wii U came out."
"Isnt 480p a crime nowadays?" added pokemonfitness1420.
During last week’s Nintendo Direct, Nintendo revealed the Switch 2’s GameChat functionality, triggered by a press of the C button on the new Joy-Con.
Players can watch each other enjoying the same or different titles and, with the help of a camera, even see each other. It's made all the easier by a built-in microphone that is shown to be relatively reliable regardless of each player's gaming environment. The C button's chat menu aims to be an all-in-one multiplayer feature that could result in Nintendo's most successful online push in decades.
